The Guidelines of the Academy of Teaching
Mission
The mission of the Academy of Teaching is to promote excellence in teaching.
Structure
The Academy of Teaching consists of past recipients of the Alumni Award for Distinguished Teaching. It is not a formal organization, but rather a network coordinated by its Executive Council. The Academy's members serve as teaching resources and advisors to the University community through undertaking activities supported by its membership. The Academy receives administrative support from the Office of Faculty and TA Development and financial resources from the Office of Academic Affairs on an as needed basis.
Membership
There are three categories of membership: regular, retired, and inactive.
Regular members are past recipients of the Alumni Award for Distinguished Teaching who are active faculty at The Ohio State University.
Each year, new recipients of the Award are welcomed as regular members; membership may be declined.
Regular members who retire become retired members.
Regular members who leave Ohio State become inactive members.
Executive Council
The Council handles the regular business of the Academy. The Chair of the Council calls meetings as needed. Meetings of the Council are open to all Academy members and minutes will be posted on the Academy listserve following the meeting.
The Executive Council consists of twelve members: nine members appointed by the Executive Council of the Academy from its regular membership, each serving a term of three years; and one ex officio member from each of the following: Office of Academic Affairs, Faculty and TA Development, and The Ohio State University Alumni Association. A quorum of the Council consists of six of the nine Academy members.
New members of the Council are nominated by current members and selected by members of the Executive Council at the first meeting of the Spring Quarter. They assume responsibilities at the last Spring Quarter meeting. Also at the first Spring Quarter meeting, the Council selects a Vice-Chair for the next year from the second or third year Academy members of the Council. The previously elected Vice-chair assumes the role of Chair. New officers assume their responsibilities immediately after the conclusion of the last Spring meeting. If the incoming Chair's term as a member of the Council is concluding, the person continues as a member of the Council for one year.
The intended timing is: new members of the Academy are announced; then new members of the Council are selected, and then new Officers are selected from second and third year members. Thus, there are always six members of the Council available for election as officers.
The Chair is the spokesperson for the Executive Council for the Academy.
The Chair appoints committees of the Academy as required. The Chair may delegate either of these responsibilities to the Vice Chair, who serves as Chair in the absence of the Chair.
Notes on the guidelines
The guidelines are not a formal constitution and bylaws. They are written to allow interpretation by reasonable people.
